She’s from the rival ranch next door. He’s trying to save his family legacy. Will his secret ruin their chance at happiness?

Book Description

Adeline Callahan is hardworking, beautiful, speaks her mind, and desperately needs a husband. None of her sisters can even date until there’s a ring on her finger. But the local boys are scared of her headstrong nature and her tough, ranch-owning father.

Sean Baker is bound and determined to do anything it takes to keep his family ranch thriving. As the oldest of six boys, he’s in charge after his dad passed away suddenly the previous year. All his brothers have found their soul mates, but Sean has sacrificed a social life and the horse training he loves to fill his dad’s shoes.

One day, Adeline from the rival ranch next door approaches Sean with a proposition. Marry her, combine the ranches, and everyone will benefit. A modern day arranged marriage of sorts. Sean laughs and tells her no way.

But then he learns a secret that threatens to destroy his family. Suddenly, Adeline’s crazy marriage idea doesn’t sound like such a bad idea.

Can he win her heart and solve both of their problems? Or will his secret ruin their chance for love…

Sean should be happy for his brothers. Each of them had finally found the person that made them feel complete. Their attitudes and work ethics had also improved, so why was his chest so tight he felt like he couldn’t breathe? He pushed through the crowd of people having fun dancing to an upbeat song.

It felt like everyone was looking at him—being the only one to come to the wedding without a date—but that was ridiculous. No one cared if he was in a relationship. He’d chosen this life, hadn’t he? Sean tightened his hands into fists and picked up his pace. He wasn’t about to give anyone an excuse to gossip about him. He was still head of the household and head of this ranch, for heaven’s sake. There were more important things to worry about than dating and searching for a wife.

Sean strode into the barn and headed straight for the stall of his favorite horse. Perhaps he could sneak out the back and take a ride to clear his head. Just because all of his brothers had paired off didn’t mean he had to do the same.

Footsteps padded behind him and he froze. Slowly, he turned to face his follower and came face to face with Adeline Callahan. His brows furrowed and he looked past her toward the barn entrance. “I wasn’t aware that you were friends with anyone in the wedding party.”

Adeline slowed her steps, coming to a stop near a load-bearing pillar. “I’m not.” She folded her arms and leaned her shoulder against the pillar. Lifting her chin, she met his gaze with a steady one of her own. “I came to talk to you.”

He stiffened. He could count on one hand the number of times he’d interacted with Adeline. Normally, he’d speak to her father about anything business related. Despite his willingness to hire Finn at his ranch when Finn had a crisis of conscience, Zeke Callahan barely tolerated the Bakers or anyone who worked for them.

Sean remained where he stood. “Does your dad know you’re here?”

She scoffed. “Does your mother know your whereabouts at any given moment?”

Heat crawled up his neck. Out of all the Callahans, she was probably the one who never pulled her punches. “What do you want, Adeline?”

Her eyes swept over him from his head, down the length of his suit coat and his jeans, and finally landed on his boots. She lifted her gaze to meet his, smirked and shook her head. “I didn’t know what to expect, but I thought you would have at least dressed the part for a wedding.”

“I don’t have time to play games with you. If you want to say something, do so. Otherwise, I have somewhere to be.”

She arched a brow and thumbed over her shoulder. “You mean out there? Because it sure didn’t look like you wanted to have anything to do with the festivities.”

Sean threw up his hands and spun on his heel. He could have Pepper saddled and ready to go in less than five minutes. Then he wouldn’t have to stay here and be mocked by a Callahan. He didn’t need any of that.

“Wait.” Adeline hurried after him, her steps quicker this time. She came up beside him, glancing at him out of the corner of her eye. “I have a proposition.”

Now they were getting somewhere. But it still wasn’t enough information to make him stop his movements.

“Why aren’t you married?” she asked.

“Why aren’t you?” he shot back.

“Because I’m only good for one or two decent dates. After that, my real side comes out and people don’t like what they see.”

Sean stopped suddenly, facing her.

Adeline’s face turned a deep shade of red and she looked away.

He almost thought he’d imagined that brief moment of vulnerability.

Her brows lowered and she lifted her chin, almost in a sign of defiance. “My family is starting to really push me to find someone, get married, settle down, have kids—you know, the whole kit and caboodle.” Adeline spun her wrist around, her focus darting from him once more. “The thing is, I’m getting real tired of it, and I just want them off my back.”

Sean snorted. “And what? You want me to help you find someone who can put up with you? Is that it?”

Her soft brown eyes met his again and, with a steady voice, she completely knocked him off his feet. “I want you to marry me.”

He gaped at her. There was no way he could have heard her right. “You want me to what?”
